TASA names Edinburg Consolidated ISD the 2013 Texas Outstanding School Board

DALLAS—The board of trustees from Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District was named the 2013 Outstanding School Board today at the 53rd annual TASA/TASB Convention in Dallas. The Texas Association of School Administrators annual School Board Awards Program recognizes outstanding Texas school boards for their commitment to their students and their communities.

Edinburg CISD was selected from among five school board finalists. Each finalist was interviewed by a committee of Texas school superintendents, chaired by the superintendent of last year's Outstanding School Board winner, James Ponce of McAllen ISD.

The selection committee’s decision is based on several criteria, including the board’s support for educational performance, support for educational improvement projects, commitment to a code of ethics, and maintenance of harmonious and supportive relationships among board members.

"The Edinburg school board exhibits an unwavering commitment to its students, setting high expectations while providing the tools, technology, support and safety they need to be empowered to succeed," said Ponce. "This board establishes programs and policies to benefit all students–from International Baccalaureate to dropout recovery to student safety programs, making Edinburg truly an honor board for all of Texas to emulate."

A district of about 33,000 students in the Rio Grande Valley, Edinburg serves a population that is 98 percent Hispanic and 85 percent economically disadvantaged.

In addition to Edinburg CISD, the other four Honor Board finalists, as well as the Regional School Board winners were recognized during the First General Session of the annual TASA/TASB Convention. The statewide finalists and Honor School Board Award recipients were:

  • Aldine ISD (ESC 4)—Superintendent Wanda Bamberg
  • Edinburg CISD (ESC 1)—Superintendent Rene Gutierrez
  • Hillsboro ISD (ESC 12)—Superintendent Buck Gilcrease
  • Mesquite ISD (ESC 10)—Superintendent Linda Henrie
  • Wortham ISD (ESC 12)—Superintendent Bruce Tabor

The three Regional Honor Boards were Hardin-Jefferson ISD (ESC 5), Livingston ISD (ESC 6) and Frankston ISD (ESC 7).

Since 1971, this prestigious program has honored school boards that have demonstrated dedication to student achievement and that make every effort to put students first.
