The State Board of Education (SBOE) will meet in Austin July 17-19 and the complete agenda has been posted.
Of particular interest, the Committee of the Full Board on Wednesday will hear from invited guest Raymund Paredes, Commissioner of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, about college and career readiness and recent legislative activities. The committee will also receive an update on the review of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The board may consider redefining the term "expert" as used in the TEKS review process.
On Thursday, the Committee on Instruction will discuss the scope of the TEKS compared to the number of instructional days needed to provide coverage and to achieve content mastery. The committee will discuss the need to define "essential" in the revision process and will also discuss potential guidance for future TEKS review committees. This item is for discussion only. Other noteworthy items on the Instruction committee's agenda include a discussion regarding workforce skills, providing an opportunity for the committee to hear invited testimony in preparation for the upcoming review and revision of the career and technical education (CTE) TEKS, and a discussion and vote on changes to the High School Equivalency Program.
