TASA Names Recipients of 2016 Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship

01.04.2016 — TASA has named the 2016 recipients of the Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship, awarded annually since 2014 to outstanding doctoral students pursuing careers in educational leadership, with particular emphasis on the superintendency.

Each of the following recipients will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship during the TASA Midwinter Conference in Austin January 24-27:

Erich Morris Erich Morris, chief financial officer, Magnolia ISD, is planning to complete his doctorate in education from Texas A&M University later this year. “I’ve chosen the superintendency as a career goal in an effort to make a significant difference for betterment of our public school students,” Morris wrote in his application. “I’ve experienced firsthand the positive power of influence a superintendent who ‘gets it’ can have on an entire school district, and I am anxious to replicate these efforts alongside my own customized approach.”
 Kim Tunnell Kim Tunnell is pursuing a doctorate in educational administration from Texas A&M University–Commerce. A former teacher and principal, Tunnell is currently the superintendent of Mineola ISD. “As a superintendent, I am able to cast the vision of quality instruction for every child and work with all stakeholders to ensure that each child is prepared for success in life,” she wrote in her application. “This role couples my passion for learning with my mission for educating children.” She plans to complete her doctorate in 2017.
 Jeanette Winn Jeanette Winn, superintendent, Karnes City ISD, is planning to complete her doctorate in education from Lamar University in December 2016. Of her position as superintendent, Winn wrote: “I am humbled by this opportunity to provide supportive leadership for our district’s employees as we progress further into the 21st century, and I am resolute in my collaboration with the city and county leaders of our community as we partner to develop productive citizens of tomorrow.”


The scholarship recognizes the ongoing leadership of Dr. Johnny L. Veselka, who has dedicated more than 40 years of service to the association, including 30 years as TASA’s executive director.
