Two TASA Members Seek Seat on TRS Board of Trustees

03.06.2015 — Dr. Greg Gibson, superintendent of Schertz-Cibolo-University City ISD, and Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson, an assistant superintendent in Brownsville ISD, are candidates for one of three trustee positions on the TRS Board of Trustees with terms beginning as early as September 1, 2015, and ending August 31, 2021.

While one of the positions is a direct appointment of the governor and the second is appointed by the governor from a list of nominees submitted by the SBOE, the position sought by Gibson and Atkinson will be appointed by the governor from a list of the three candidates who receive the most votes after nomination and election by TRS active members this spring.

Biographical information on the six candidates who have been nominated by the active TRS members and qualified to run in this year’s election is featured on pages 4 and 5 of the March 2015 issue of TRS News.

Eligible active public education members may vote online or by mail. Instructions for both voting methods are included with the ballots, which, along with postage-paid return envelopes, were included in eligible voters’ mailed March 2015 TRS newsletter.

To be counted, ballots must be returned in envelopes received by TRS no later than May 5, 2015. Online votes must be cast by 5 p.m. the same day.

Names of the top three candidates, along with the number of votes they received in the election, will be submitted to the governor. The governor will then appoint one of the individuals to fill a six-year term beginning as early as September 1.
