Free Biology Textbook Just Released in iBooks; Content Included in TASA on iTunes U Biology Resources

The non-profit E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation announced Monday the release of a free 41-chapter iBooks textbook series called Life on Earth that is designed to excite and instruct high school biology students with state-of-the-art digital media that includes animations, video, and interactive modules. Through a special preview, Texas educators and curriculum specialists working with TASA had the opportunity to incorporate E. O. Wilson's Life on Earth into the existing TASA on iTunes U biology course resources.

Inspired and led by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward O. Wilson, the comprehensive Life on Earth iBooks textbook covers standards-based biology curriculum that is aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), as well as the Next Generation Science Standards and other national and international curriculum standards.

"I am thrilled that the Foundation is offering this outstanding resource at no cost to schools in an effort to improve science instruction for our future generations. This will be an invaluable resource for educators," said Casey Helmick, Northwest ISD's STEM Academy Facilitator and content lead for the science resources in the TASA on iTunes U project.

Life on Earth is accompanied by an iTunes U course that brings an added dimension to the classroom. In addition to reading assignments, the course incorporates extension activities such as field observations, writing assignments, project-based learning exercises, and more, using apps and other materials.

"The E. O. Wilson's Life on Earth iBook is an exceptional resource for Texas educators who are ready to transform their classrooms. The E. O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation has done an outstanding job with the creation of interactive materials in a book that will engage students," said Jodie Deinhammer, Anatomy and Physiology teacher in Coppell ISD and TASA's biology course contributor.
