House Public Education Committee to Discuss Pre-K Bills on March 10

03.06.2015 — The House Public Education Committee will meet at 2 p.m. or upon adjournment of the House on Tuesday, March 10, to consider the following bills:

  • HB 4 by Dan Huberty, et al. – Establishes a high quality pre-K program with additional funding for public school districts and charter schools to improve programs if they adhere to certain requirements
  • HB 173 by Carol Alvarado – Requires districts that offer pre-K to include class size, ratio of instructional staff to students, and assessment information in PEIMS
  • HB 296 by Gene Wu – Requires districts that receive FSP funds or grants for pre-K programs to limit class sizes to 22, hire teachers with bachelor’s degrees and appropriate certification and training, and use approved curricula
  • HB 424 by Harold Dutton – Requires that pre-K classes be provided on a full-day basis and eliminates the option to charge tuition for additional half-day classes for certain children
  • HB 1100 by Eric Johnson, et al. – Provides school districts and charter schools with funding to implement free, full-day “gold standard” pre-K programs for certain eligible children
  • HB 1188 by Joe Deshotel – Creates a joint interim committee to study and make recommendations on early childhood education
