AASA National Superintendent of the Year Program

  • AASA SOY About the Program

AASA's National Superintendent of the Year Program pays tribute to the talent and vision of the men and women who lead our nation's public schools.

The 2018 awards program culminates with the presentation of the award at AASA's National Conference on Education in Nashville, Tennessee, February 15-17, 2018.

All state finalists and the four national finalists are recognized during the first general session at AASA's National Conference on Education, during which the National Superintendent of the Year is named. All four national finalists, as well as state superintendents of the year, receive special plaques and medallions. In addition, a $10,000 college scholarship is presented in the name of the National Superintendent of the Year to a student in the high school from which the superintendent graduated, or to a student in a high school from which the National Superintendent of the Year is the current superintendent.

    Eligibility

Any U.S. superintendent who plans to continue in the profession may be nominated. This program is designed to recognize outstanding leadership of active, front-line superintendents. It is not meant to be a recognition of service at retirement.

    Nomination Procedure

School board members, parents, colleagues, community members and other superintendents may nominate a superintendent. Superintendents may also nominate themselves (and need not be nominated to apply). Both the nomination and application processes are online. Visit AASA's National Superintendent of the Year page for instructions.

    Selection Process

To be eligible for National Superintendent of the Year, a Texas applicant must first be selected by TASA as Texas' nominee* for AASA National Superintendent of the Year. Superintendents who are nominated (superintendents may also self-nominate by completing the application), must complete the online AASA application by October 9, 2017. A committee of TASA members chosen by the executive director will review and score the applications and determine the Texas nominee for AASA National Superintendent of the Year.

TASA will submit the name of the Texas nominee to AASA by the November 1 deadline. A national panel of judges will select four finalists for AASA National Superintendent of the Year, based on written applications and letters of recommendation. The panel will interview the four finalists in Washington D.C. to select the AASA National Superintendent of the Year.

*NOTE: AASA's National Superintendent of the Year program is NOT affiliated with the Texas Association of School Board's Superintendent of the Year Program. The programs have separate applications and judging procedures.
