AASA National Superintendent of the Year Program

  • AASA SOY About the Program

AASA's National Superintendent of the Year Program pays tribute to the talent and vision of the men and women who lead our nation's public schools.

The 2019 awards program will culminate with the presentation of the award at AASA's National Conference on Education in Los Angeles, California, February 14-16, 2019.

All state finalists and the four national finalists are recognized during the first general session at AASA's National Conference on Education, during which the National Superintendent of the Year is named. All four national finalists, as well as state superintendents of the year, receive special plaques and medallions. In addition, a $10,000 college scholarship is presented in the name of the National Superintendent of the Year to a student in the high school from which the superintendent graduated, or to a student in a high school from which the National Superintendent of the Year is the current superintendent.

    Eligibility

Any AASA Affiliate Association State Superintendent of the Year® who plans to continue in the profession may be nominated. This program is designed to recognize the outstanding leadership of active, front-line superintendents. It is not recognition of service at retirement or a program to reward current state or national leaders.

    Selection Process

To be eligible for National Superintendent of the Year, a Texas superintendent must first be selected by TASA as Texas' nominee for AASA National Superintendent of the Year. TASA traditionally nominates the superintendent who is awarded that year's Texas Superintendent of the Year honors by the Texas Association of School Boards and does so by AASA's November 1 deadline. A national panel of judges then selects four finalists for AASA National Superintendent of the Year, based on written applications and letters of recommendation. The panel interviews the four finalists in Washington D.C. to select the AASA National Superintendent of the Year.
